The cost of oil and gas drilling operations can be reduced and rates of penetration in arduous geological conditions improved with a British-made tool that dampers out damaging vibration and increases drill-bit life.

The Harmonic Isolation Tool from Pilot Drilling Control (PDC) eliminates vibration and whirl - key destructive forces imposed on a drill bit - by decoupling the bottom hole assembly and mud motor harmonics from the bit.

PDC reports that drill-bit life is typically increased two or three times when using the tool, with an eightfold increase recorded in one case. There are also documented logs indicating that the device has shortened lateral acceleration considerably, while achieving a significant lowering or axial vibration.

Suitable for use with rotary or mud motor operations, the tool allows the drill bit to self-centre dynamically and incorporates elastomeric absorbers to cushion bit tilt and axial shock. Standard pin and box connections make fitting easy. The tool is normally installed between the bit and the bottom hole assembly, but can also be used between the bottom hole assembly and the drill string to minimise drill-string breakages.

Spark Controls of Bangalore has developed a CNC type programmable heavy- duty winding machine to wind exclusively distribution transformer coils. The width of the bobbin swing is also upto 400 mm. The wire ranging from 2 mm to 0.2 mm can be wound at a high as 500 rpm and as low as 20 rpm.

The heavyduty transverse unti fitted with Sanyo Denky stepper motor evenly distributes the wire to achieve fine layer finish. The microprocess or based controlled with built -in PWM based DC drive achieves soft start and smooth ending. Both strip winding and round wire winding are possible.
